Project Brief
Oktra are one of the UK’s leading office design & build companies. The Guildford division won the contract to convert offices into a suite of biotechnology laboratories and selected Klick to design and install the specialist lab furniture.
The lab end user is involved in supporting the development of diagnostic research for the life sciences industry. During the selection process of the project client site visits were arranged to a previous Klick installation at Oxford BioDynamics. This allowed the laboratory users to view Klick’s furniture in situ and get feedback from the Oxford Biodynamics team about the quality and practicality of the furniture installation. During the visit they also refined their decisions about design details such as the specification of the cable slots.
Mobile Laboratory Furniture Design
Flexibility was a priority for the laboratory team and a large proportion of the furniture was free-standing to allow for the layout to be re-arranged. One feature of the layout was to position loose tables back-to-back to form a peninsular extending from the perimeter benching. Mobile cabinets were located below the tables which means the whole section of furniture could be located elsewhere if the workflow or staff numbers change.
Laboratory Furniture Design Details
In addition to the mobile furniture, fixed benching was fitted around the perimeter to accommodate machinery and sink units. Klick liaised with the project management team as it was critical to get the scribing of the worktop and the leg spacing correct around the existing pillars.
The lab end users preferred the idea of broader cable slots for the Trespa worktops, over the use of more traditional cable port holes. The cable slot design, dimensions and spacings were specified to accommodate their equipment. Cable trays were also requested to run below below the workbenches for cable management.
Klick enjoyed a very positive relationship with Oktra, the project ran smoothly and was completed to schedule.
