Design of Laboratory Furniture for New Science Block
Due to an increased demand for STEM subjects the college identified the need to improve their science facilities. Pozzoni architects designed the state-of-the-art new science block with 4 new practical science labs and 8 demo labs, which will offer a significant improvement in the college’s teaching capability.
Pozzoni approached Klick to provide a design service for the layouts of the laboratories and to engage with the college to fully understand their requirements. Klick liaised with all parties, producing 3D drawings using Revit and refining the designs until all the layouts were approved.
Laboratory Furniture Design Maximises Science Teaching Space
As the college is situated in a densely populated area of Manchester, with little scope for expansion, the footprint for the new block was limited. Early discussions focused on maximising the teaching space and therefore the decision was made to opt for a large proportion of demo labs which take up less space than a fully equipped practical lab.
The laboratories feature full length windows which meant perimeter benching could not be accommodated on any of the external walls. The science labs required storage provision for equipment/materials and therefore deep cranked islands were designed to accommodate storage cupboards within the bench space on the opposite side to the seating.
DDA Furniture Improves Accessibility to Science Labs
A further goal was to improve accessibility within the new block. In the science labs, Klick designed a dedicated DDA practical area with an additional adjustable height unit included in the main teaching area for improved visibility of the teacher during theory lessons.
