“Our team at Holly Lodge wanted to find a company that specialised in school science lab refurbishment work for a project in our science block. We were looking for value but our selection was not based on price alone. It was a priority to find a company that we could build a relationship with and one that would be accommodating in their approach. At the early stages, during site visits, we were impressed with their level of experience. Their consultants listened carefully and immediately understood the practicalities of what was involved. They made valuable suggestions on how to plan the rooms and provided CAD drawings to illustrate the options. All the planning paid off and we developed a fantastic working relationship with Klick.... The project ran really smoothly, even though it was started during term-time and I couldn’t fault any of their team. The teachers are thrilled with the finished rooms and the new labs offer vastly improved teaching facilities.”

PROJECT BRIEF
The school were looking to complete a science lab refurbishment project and to change the layout in 4 labs. The goal was to improve student engagement and to create a 21st century teaching environment more suitable for modern teaching methods.
The teaching staff were particularly concerned about the students being distracted during theory lessons. Klick’s designer advised that a separate theory area would allow students to focus more on the teacher rather than fiddling with taps etc.
The theory area, which was defined by a contrasting floor colour, allowed all students to face the front so they could clearly see the whiteboard. This also provided good pupil visibility for the teacher. Previously the students were seated on wooden stools for theory lessons but they found these uncomfortable which was a further distraction. Klick recommended standard height tables and more comfortable chairs which would encourage focus during the theory sessions.
Klick recommended the inclusion of teaching walls at the front of each classroom which provides a focal point and plenty of storage space. A highlight colour was suggested to create impact and the school selected turquoise contrasting doors.
Work was scheduled to start two weeks before the end of term. Any site access was scheduled around lessons in order to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. Once the original furniture had been stripped out it revealed some unsightly pipework. Whilst on site Klick’s fitters modified the furniture, constructing a detachable matching panel to obscure the pipes, which meant the project could be finished in line with the original deadline.
