Jim Cooper – School Business Manager, St Edmund’s Catholic School, Portsmouth
The school were looking to transform their science department and create bright, vibrant learning spaces. The quality of the science laboratory furniture was paramount and Velstone wortops were selected for their durability and ease of maintenance. The science staff felt it was important for all students to face the front and to have easy access to services.
The school were keen to make the most of their budget and opted for term time installation at a discounted rate. It was decided to refurbish all the science laboratories in the department on a 4 year rolling programme, with an annual schedule of work running from mid May until the end of June.
Klick’s design team reviewed the configuration of the department. Store rooms needed to be removed to create more space to accommodate the science laboratory design the school wanted. The new layout allowed for better sight lines and passive supervision of lessons. Following discussion with the science technicians, racking was selected for the prep rooms, in order to provide more space for trays.
Work commenced on the 2nd floor of the science block and then moved up to the 4th floor. This presented additional logistical challenges which were overcome by our site team and work progressed to schedule. The school were happy with the quality of the product and management of the initial science laboratory refurbishment and Klick were delighted to be awarded subsequent phases of the project.
