PROJECT BRIEF
The brief was to transform three outdated science labs and bring them into the 21st century. It was critical for the supplier to be a reputable and specialist company capable of executing the refurbishment to the high standards of the senior leadership team. Health and safety and the safeguarding of pupils were also high priorities for the college.
Design Brief for Laboratory Refurbishment
The Klick design team worked closely with the college to develop practical layouts that worked for the teaching staff and estates team. The main lab is for applied science and will be used for teaching biology, chemistry and physics. The other 2 labs are more limited in size and it was challenging to accommodate the required number of students.
The L shaped physics lab required careful planning to make the best use of the whole space. The smaller section of the room will be used for bag storage and additional practical space. Loose tables were specified to add flexibility as these could be moved to join the adjacent fixed benching creating room for 2.4m long ‘air tracks’.
In the third lab space was very limited. Trespa shelving was designed to run around the perimeter for the storage of equipment to keep the workbench clear for practical work. Cupboards were located between the penisulas to maximise storage.
Refurbishment of the Science Labs
The refurbishment started in May half term and continued during term time. Work was planned around the school time-table with any noisy activities completed after school hours.
